Conquering Holiday Carpet Stains

The biggest holiday of the year is just days away, and carpet stains are pretty much inevitable, so how can you conquer that carpet stain removal when the need arises. Close to Halloween, Green Clean discussed treating tricky carpet stains, so let’s get a little more in detail about carpet stain removal.

Previous Tips
Make sure that you remove any loose materials that have gotten onto the carpet. Apply soapy water to the stained area with a spray bottle, and make sure to blot up the spot. Also, never rub a carpet stain.

Wine or Juice Stain
It’s the holidays, and the adults in the family may want to enjoy a glass of wine or other beverages that are more likely to stain your carpet if spills happen. If an accident occurs, spray the spot with club soda and blot with a microfiber cloth.

Holiday Chocolate
Holiday chocolates are popular right now, and kids and adults alike get excited about these delicious treats. If melted chocolate gets onto your carpet, place a resealable bag with ice on the stain to harden it. After it has set, use a dull knife to scrape the chocolate away.

Using dish soap and a warm water solution, work from the outside towards the center of the stain. Let the solution soak on the stain for at least five minutes after allowing the solution to do its work blot the stain until it’s gone.

Dirt Stains
From December to February, the colder weather and the possibility of snow/sleet during the holidays in Raleigh, mud is a likely issue. If these stains appear on your carpets, allow the stain to dry before you attempt carpet stain removal.

Scrape off as much of the mud as possible, then vacuum it. Apply a detergent solution that you’ve created to the stain and then let the solvent sit on the stain for about ten minutes — using a clean, white towel, blot up the stain.

Fat-Based Stains
Holiday dinners mean that you might have fat-based stains created by butter, margarine, gravy, etc. pop up on that carpet when things get spilled. Baking soda is your best bet for a carpet cleaning product for these types of stains.

Sprinkle stains with baking soda and let it sit on the stains for about six hours. Vacuum up the area and then blot the stain with a cloth that has rubbing alcohol on it. A dry-solvent spot cleaner is also another option, but make sure to follow the instructions on the label.
